About Me

I have been a physical therapist since graduating from Springfield College with a Masters of Science degree in 1990. After graduation, I worked at an acute hospital and an industrial rehabilitation company that specialized in work hardening and work conditioning. In 1997, I started Alternatives in Physical Therapy at the Greater Springfield YMCA.  The premise of my practice was to offer manual techniques and exercise prescriptions to assist my patients in managing their pain and improving their functional level. Over the years, I have expanded the practice to include locations at the Scantic Valley YMCA in Wilbraham, MA and the Hampshire Regional YMCA in Northampton, MA. The YMCA offers a unique setting where I and my coworkers can provide manual therapy, exercise prescriptions, post-rehabilitation programs, and aquatic therapy. My practice models itself after the YMCA motto: Spirit, Mind and Body; treating each patient individually based on their needs specifically. In addition, I train YMCA employees in our post-rehabilitation program, 1st Step Back, to work with members who are recovering from medical conditions or injuries.  I enjoy time with my wife and 5 children, playing lacrosse, hiking, woodworking and reading.

My Skills

Even before graduating from physical therapy school, I was interested in manual therapy techniques.  After learning about myofascial release techniques, I took my first CranioSacral Therapy class with the Upledger Institute. From there, my interest in osteopathic techniques grew to include Muscle Energy Technique, Visceral Manipulation, Neural Manipulation, Manual Articular Approach, Lymph Drainage Therapy and Strain Counterstrain.  I believe that manual therapy and exercise offer the most efficient process to healing and improving function.  I use a variety of exercise programs such as Feldenkrais, Essentrics, Muscle Imbalance, trunk stabilization, Parkinson’s movement re-education, balance exercises, posture exercises, gait training and aquatic exercises. In addition, working in a YMCA, allows our practice to offer fitness training to our patients; including cardiovascular and strength training with fitness equipment.
